The United Nations will put forward a resolution promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula during the PyeongChang Olympics at its 72nd General Assembly in New York, Monday (local time).
The "Olympic Truce Resolution for PyeongChang" will request U.N. member states to refrain from committing any hostile acts around the Olympics period, from seven days prior to its opening to seven days after the closing.
This is also part of a wider resolution: "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal," meant to uphold peace not just on the Korean Peninsula, but in all of East Asia for the upcoming Olympics planned in the region. It begins with the PyeongChang Games next year followed by Tokyo in 2020 and Beijing in 2022.
Every two years since 1993, the U.N. has adopted a truce resolution when either the Summer or Winter Olympics takes place.
The Korean government prepared the draft for the PyeongChang truce resolution and developed it through engaging in negotiations with other U.N. member states.
The decision to adopt the item will be finalized at the general meeting.
Korea's representatives for the Olympics will participate, including South Korean Olympian figure skater Kim Yuna.
The government will also begin an online campaign celebrating the PyeongChang Truce Resolution, today.
