Perfect Setup

I teach beginning golfers to pose in three basic positions: address, the top of the swing and the finish. Posing allows them to check out the fundamentals of each position and then adjust their own pose to fit the model before they go on to the next position ?all while looking in the mirror.

In the address position, there are four important elements to concentrate on:

1. The Grip

Because your hands are your only connection to the club, and indirectly to the ball, one of the most important fundamentals of a good setup is a correct grip.

To begin, I recommend the use of a stronger grip position for most amateurs (hands rotated a bit clockwise, away from the target). This configuration allows you to maximize your wrist cock, and helps you to rotate the clubface through impact to square the face.

A good way to check your grip is to look at the Vs on your hand ― the shape that forms on each hand where your thumb and hand pinch together. The Vs of your left and right hands should be pointing between your back shoulder and head.
