Launching its AI-based LG Whisen Dual Air Conditioner, the nation's second-largest electronics maker said it will also release voice-recognizing home appliances next year.
"We will lead the global premium air conditioner market based on AI systems that understand customers, and mixed air solutions that can be used during all seasons," LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company President Dan Song said in a press conference in Seoul, Monday.
Song stressed that future home appliances will be more interconnected.
"So far, each home appliance such as a refrigerator or washing machine has been used separately," he said. "With the advancement of AI technologies, they will be expanded into space-oriented packages and mixed systems in the future. In light of such a trend, we will start introducing Wi-Fi connection to all products released this year."
The new Whisen Dual Air Conditioner is capable of learning user patterns and surrounding spaces, based on deep learning technology, which allows an AI system to "learn" from unstructured data collected from cloud networks as well as sensors and cameras attached to the device.
LG Electronics also said the company will also boost cooperation with the world's leading AI companies like Amazon, Google and Apple on platform technologies.
"We are also ready to push for mergers and acquisitions should we find possible partners who understand our vision and strategic directions," Song said.
The electronics maker said its progress in AI technologies for home appliances will advance to voice recognition next year from the application of deep learning technology so far.
"Though voice-recognizing air conditioners have been released years ago as infant-stage products, we focused on introducing deep learning technology for them," LG Electronics' air solution business head Lee Kam-kyu said. "We believe the combination of voice recognition and deep learning technologies will complete the AI system for home appliances and will release more voice-recognizing products next year."
As the company targets over 10 percent growth in the global air conditioner market, LG Electronics said it is eyeing the domestic system air conditioner sector to meet increased demand from new apartments scheduled to be completed this year.
