Samsung Electronics has launched a new unit dedicated to car components as the firm seeks to grow its presence in the lucrative car parts industry.
In an organizational overhaul after its management shakeup, Samsung Electronics said the "Vehicle Component Business Unit" will initially focus on boosting its strengths in car infotainment products and those will be used in unmanned vehicles.
"The newly created unit will closely collaborate with other Samsung technology units," Samsung said. Executive vice president (EVP) Park Jong-hwan will lead the unit.
Another change is the launch of an audio-visual (AV) business unit inside the company's visual display division.
Samsung also has created a "Mobile Enhancing" team inside its telecom division in an attempt to find "something new" as the company's handset business struggles due to the rapid rise of cheap Chinese phones and as the industry has been reshaped to focus on price not fancy hardware features.
Its device solution division, which handles the company's key semiconductor business, launched an independent unit to better respond to growing challenges in the industry.
The company said it had created teams at its Korean and West-South businesses only to handle online distribution channels.
"Focusing on emerging markets, Samsung will offer more authority to staff members in product development teams and product strategy teams," company spokesman Kwon Seung-han said. "That's why Samsung launched a product strategy center at Samsung China."
As Samsung has been accelerating efforts to cut costs and improve efficiency, the company said it has cut the role of back offices such as communications, finance, labor, human resources and investor relations.
Under the overhaul, its global marketing division was cut to a global marketing center, while a global cooperation team was merged into the company's communications team.
Its investor relations team, which was formerly a unit of the communications team, was moved into the management support group.
Samsung named Seo Byeong-sam as head of its home appliances business.
Rhee In-jong, who was one of the key members in the development of Samsung Knox and Pay, was named head of the product development team in the telecom division. Nho Tae-moon was named head of the second product development team.
Samsung Electronics said it had left the current three-CEO system unchanged. Vice chairman and a senior CEO, Kwon Oh-hyun, will handle the company's technology center.
Another CEO, Yoon Boo-keun, will handle the global marketing center, global customer service center, digital media lab and design management center, while the other CEO and mobile chief, Shin Jong-kyun, will manage its software center and global technology center, Samsung said.
"With new teams and executives, Samsung Electronics will hold internal meetings to set up next year's strategies," Kwon said. "We are ready to take off for 2016."
