Four universities will be banned from accepting foreign students for one year starting this fall semester, as punishment for poorly managing non-Korean students, the Ministry of Justice said Sunday.
They are: Hansei University, Jeonbuk Science College, Gyeongnam National University of Science And Technology and Taegu Science University.
Those universities will not be able to issue visas for foreign students including freshmen, transfer students and those for language training courses.
Foreign students that are currently attending courses will not be affected.
This move follows the evaluation by the Justice and Education ministries on all colleges that had foreign students in 2014, under the foreign student certification system which was introduced in 2011.
The ministries used five indicators when assessing the schools: percentage of expulsion before graduation and illegal staying, language skills, fiscal soundness, diversity of foreign students and percentage of registration of medical insurance. The four schools did not meet the set standards.
The ministries also selected 37 schools that they think manage foreign students properly, including Sungkyunkwan University and Soongsil University.
