Gadhafi troops rape 1,000 women in Misrata

Troops of Muammar Gaddafi, the long-serving dictator of Libya, are disputed to have raped as many as 1,000 local women, Yonhap News Agency reported quoting a foreign newspaper.

Walid Abdu Bark, a 17-year-old soldier confessed that his unit broke into a home and sexually harassed four sisters of the family, the agency reported, quoting the Sunday times of Britain.

“I was ordered to rape all the sisters,” Bark recalled. The young soldier characterized himself as a victim, saying that he enlisted for 200,000 dinar in order to support his family and sick mother abandoned by his father.

However, the local officials contended that Abdu Bark and his unit repeatedly committed heinous sex crimes all around Misrata. An obstetrician and gynecologist, Ismael Fotia estimated that around 1,000 women were raped.

Some soldiers even recorded the rape using cell phone cameras, according to the doctors at Hekma hospital. “Gadhafi soldiers made the girls say their name in the camera before raping them,” one said. Cell phones with such video were found among the personal items of wounded or dead soldiers.

A nurse told that her closest friends crossed the border to Tunisia after their four daughters and a 13 year old son were repeatedly raped by Gaddafi army.

Doctors and psychiatrists in Misrata are treating the victims of the sexual assaults. Some rebel soldiers are reported to have proposed to the harassed women from the guilt that they failed to protect them.

Rape of Gaddafi soldiers was first divulged when a Libyan female Iman al-Obeidi showed up in a hotel in Tripoli and told the international press corps staying there that she was gang-raped by 15 Gaddafi soldiers.

리비아 카디피군이 포위했던 미스라타에서 현지 여성 1천여 명이 카다피군에 성폭행을 당했다는 주장이 제기됐다.

영국 선데이타임스는 22일(현지시간) 반군에 붙잡힌 10대 카디피군 병사와 현지 의사의 말을 인용해 이같이 보도했다.

17살인 왈리드 압두 바크르는 그의 부대가 미스라타의 한 가정에 침입해 집 안에 있던 자매 4명을 번갈아가며 성폭행한 사실을 털어놓았다. 그는 당시 “모든 자매를 강간하라는 명령을 받았다”고 말했다.

압두 바크르는 그러면서 오히려 자신을 희생자라고 주장했다. 그는 아버지가 병든 어머니와 가족들을 버리고 떠나자 가장 역할을 맡게 됐으며 카다피군으로부터 20만 디나르를 받고 군에 입대했다는 것이다.

이 10대 병사는 야르무크 캠프에서 일주일간 훈련을 받은 뒤 미스라타 격전지로 파견됐으나 반군에 포위돼 항복한 뒤 현재 다른 카다피군 병사들과 함께 미스라타 학교에 수용돼 있다.

현지 관리들은 압두 바크르와 그의 부대에 의한 무자비한 성폭행이 미스라타 전역에서 반복적으로 자행됐다고 주장했다.

산부인과 의사 이스마엘 포티아는 여성 1천 명이 성폭행을 당한 것으로 추정했다.

헤크마 병원의 의사들은 카다피군 일부가 휴대전화로 성폭행 장면을 녹화하기도 했다고 말했다. 한 의사는 “카다피군이 소녀들에게 카메라에 대고 이름을 말하도록 한 뒤 그들의 얼굴을 찍고 나서 성폭행했다”고 전했다. 이런 영상이 담긴 휴대전화는 부상당하거나 숨진 카다피군 소지품에서 발견됐다.

한 간호사는 자신의 가장 친한 친구들이 딸 넷과 13살짜리 아들 하나가 카디피군에게 반복적으로 성폭행을 당한 이후 튀니지 국경을 넘었다고 전했다.

카디피군의 성폭행 사실은 지난 3월 리비아 여성 에만 알-오베이디가 해외 취재진이 머무는 트리폴리의 한 호텔에 나타나 카다피군에게 억류당한 채 부대원 15명에게 집단 성폭행을 당했다고 주장하면서 외부로 알려진 바 있다.

미스라타에 있는 의사들과 심리학자들은 현재 폭행당한 여성들을 치료하고 있으며 일부 반군들은 이 여성들을 제때 지켜주지 못했다는 죄책감에 이들에게 청혼하는 것으로 전해졌다.
