A free unmanned monorail system commenced operations to connect the Sindang Hyundai Apartment complex to Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park in Seoul's Jung District on Thursday, according to the district office on Friday.
The introduction of the 110-meter-long monorail represents the first time such a mode of transport has been rolled out in the capital.
Operating from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, the monorail shuttles passengers between its three stations. With a capacity of 15 individuals, including provisions for wheelchair and stroller accessibility, the monorail is free for all to use.
The system operates autonomously, triggered by the simple push of a departure button. Additionally, efforts have been made to enhance accessibility, with the renovation of existing steep staircases to ensure a smoother transition for commuters.
In 2020, the introduction of the monorail system was selected as part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's project to improve convenience in hilly areas, and groundbreaking commenced in September 2022.
Kim Kil-sung, the head of the district, underscored the transformative impact of the monorail, heralding a new era of accessibility and convenience.
"It is no longer necessary for citizens to climb steep stairs to go to the park," Kim said. "In the future, Jung District will continue to offer solid and sturdy support for residents."
Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park, which spans around 75,570 square meters and offers an array of recreational amenities, is expected to offer greater benefits to the local community with its improved accessibility, Kim said.
As the monorail assumes its role as a prominent landmark in the area, district officials anticipate a ripple effect on the local economy, attracting tourists and fostering economic growth in neighboring districts.
