Rep. Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost the presidential race against rival Yoon Suk-yeol in March, was elected, Sunday, as the chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK).
지난 3월 대선에서 윤석열 후보에게 근소한 차이로 패했던 이재명 의원이 더불어민주당 대표로 선출됐다.

The latest victory marks an extraordinary comeback for Lee to the party's mainstream from his defeat in the presidential election. The two-year chairmanship will assure Lee of his right to recommend candidates for the next general election in 2024. He is anticipated to enjoy uncontested power within the party, paving the way for the 57-year-old to make another presidential bid five years from now.
이번 승리는 이재명 의원의 대선 패배자에서 당 주류로의 이례적인 복귀를 의미한다. 2년 임기는 이 의원에게 2024년 차기 총선 후보를 추천할 수 있는 권한을 보장한다. 이 의원은 당 내에서 확실한 권력을 누릴 것으로 예상되며 57세인 그가 5년 후 대선에 재출마할 수 있는 기반을 마련했다.

During the DPK's national convention at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul, Lee secured a total of 77.77 percent of votes to outpace Rep. Park Yong-jin, who garnered 22.23 percent. The number of votes Lee received is the highest on record in the party's election for a leader.
서울 올림픽체조경기장에서 열린 더불어민주당 대표 경선에서 이재명 의원은 77.77%의 득표율로 박용진 의원(22.23%)을 제치고 당선됐다. 이 신임 대표의 득표율은 더불어민주당 역대 당 대표 득표율 중 가장 높은 것이다.

Lee's victory had been widely expected, as he already secured 78.22 percent of votes in primaries held across the country throughout this month. The primaries accounted for 40 percent of the total votes, while Sunday's voting at the national convention accounted for 30 percent.
이달 내내 전국에서 치러진 예비선거에서 이 의원은 78.22%의 득표율을 기록해 그의 승리는 이미 예상되어 왔다. 전체 득표에서 예비선거는 40%, 일요일 전당대회 투표는 30% 비중을 차지했다.

The former Gyeonggi Province governor vowed to stake his political career on regaining public support for his party, which had diminished due to a soft stance on North Korea and failed attempts to tame soaring apartment prices, among other policies.
이재명 전 경기도지사는 북한에 대한 관대한 태도 및 치솟는 아파트 가격 억제 시도 등으로 감소한 민주당에 대한 대중의 지지를 회복하는 데 정치 경력을 걸겠다고 약속했다.

"I will take this job with the mindset that society's calling on Lee Jaemyung will end if I fail this critical mission of laying the groundwork for the DPK to take the presidential office back," Lee said in his acceptance speech. "I will devote myself to rebuild a whole new DPK."
이 대표는 수락연설에서 "민주당의 재집권을 위한 토대구축에 실패하면 이재명의 소명도 끝난다는 사즉생의 각오로 임하겠다"며 "완전히 새로운 더불어민주당 재건을 위해 헌신할 것"이라고 밝혔다.

Lee will serve a two-year term, and will recommend the party's candidates for the next general election slated for April 10, 2024, which is one of the most coveted powers of the chairman. Lee's victory also signifies that lawmakers supporting him are now the DPK's mainstream faction.
이재명 대표의 임기는 2년으로 당 대표의 가장 선망되는 권한 중 하나인 2024년 4월 10일 24대 총선의 공천권을 행사하게 된다. 이 후보의 승리는 그를 지지하는 의원들이 이제 민주당의 주류 세력이 되었다는 의미이기도 하다.

During the speech, Lee proposed a meeting with the president, saying he will "assist the government and the ruling People Power Party if they take the right path for the public."
이 대표는 수락연설에서 "국민을 위해 바른 길을 간다면 정부여당을 돕겠다"며 대통령과의 회담을 제안했다.
