Actress Jun Ji-hyun is dating the grandson of famed “hanbok” (Korean traditional costume) designer Lee Young-hee, local press announced Thursday.
The 30-year-old star of “My Sassy Girl,” also known as Gianna Jun, is said to have been dating the man, also 30 and identified only by his surname Choi, for about a year. Their two families have been discussing marriage plans.
According to many sources in the entertainment industry, the two were childhood friends and their relationship recently evolved into a romantic one. Choi works for a local branch of a U.S. financial firm and is the second son of Lee’s daughter, fashion designer Lee Jeong-woo. His older brother is said to have been a member of a K-pop band.
Choi’s maternal grandmother, Lee, recently made headlines for holding a fashion show on Dokdo Island in October. She is also known for launching a Korean art museum in Manhattan, New York and for designing hanbok that heads of state wore during the 2005 APEC Summit in Korea.
Choi’s mother, Lee Jeong-woo, operates her own fashion brand and has lately been frequently spotted golfing with Jun. Reports say that she has often introduced the actress to acquaintances as “my daughter-in-law.”
Jun made her debut as a model in 1997 and has since forayed into acting, appearing in popular TV series such as “Happy Together” and the film “Il Mare,” and rose to “hallyu” (Korean wave) stardom through “My Sassy Girl” in 2001. She made her U.S. film debut in “Blood: The Last Vampire” in 2009 and appeared in the lead role in Wayne Wang’s “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” this year.
She recently wrapped up production for Choi Dong-hoon’s film “Dodukdeul” (Thieves) which is slated for release next year.
