The government is being urged to improve the way it handles COVID-19 patients after an infected man died when his condition deteriorated quickly while he was waiting at home for an ambulance.
코로나19 확진 판정을 받은 남성이 상태가 갑자기 악화되어 자택에서 구급차를 기다리던 중 사망한 가운데 정부는 코로나19 환자 관리 방식을 개선하도록 촉구 받고 있다.
This latest fatality is raising concerns as more patients displaying mild or no symptoms are expected to be told to stay home in line with the government's envisioned shift to a "living with COVID-19" policy from November.
이번 사망은 11월부터 시행할 것으로 예정된 '위드 코로나' 정책에 따라 더 많은 경증 및 무증상 환자들이 재택치료를 받을 것으로 예상되면서 우려를 낳고 있다.
According to the Central Disaster Management Headquarters, the man, in his 60s, who was placed under isolation at his home in the Seodaemun District of Seoul, died Thursday morning, after his condition deteriorated abruptly while waiting to be transferred to a hospital.
중앙사고수습본부에 따르면 서울 서대문구에서 자가격리 중이던 60대 남성은 상태가 급격히 악화되어 병원에 이송되기를 기다리던 중 목요일 아침 사망했다.
This death is the first reported among some 13,000 cumulative cases of people who have undergone home treatment since the system was adopted in January of this year.
이번 사망은 올해 1월 재택치료가 도입된 이후 재택치료를 받은 13,000여 명의 누적 인원 가운데 보고된 최초의 사례이다.
The home treatment policy was introduced in January and was limited only to children aged 12 and under who do not require hospitalization.
지난 1월 도입된 재택치료 정책은 생활치료센터에 입소해 치료 받기 어려운 만 12세 미만 어린이에게 제한되어 있다.
From Oct. 8, the government expanded the policy to those under the age of 70 showing mild symptoms or asymptomatic patients, with no underlying diseases.
정부는 10월 8일부터 기저질환이 없는 70세 미만 경증 및 무증상 확진자들도 재택 치료를 받을 수 있게끔 정책을 확대했다.
The government, for its part, said it will strengthen cooperation with 119 authorities and local governments to prevent a recurrence, while maintaining its stance of expanding home treatment.
이에 방역 당국은 소방청 및 지자체와 협력해 재발 방지를 위해 노력하는 한편 재택치료를 확대하는 방침은 유지할 것이라고 정부는 전했다.
