A car driven by an intoxicated driver hit a group of people who were waiting for a taxi in southern Seoul, leaving two dead and four others injured, police said Friday.
The accident occurred just minutes past midnight at a time when about 1,200 police officers were carrying out large-scale sobriety tests on streets around the city at that time.
According to police, the 27-year-old driver, identified only as Kim, heavily drunk, was driving his Grandeur sedan on the street to Gangnam subway station, lost control and abruptly veered onto the sidewalk. Two people trying to catch a taxi on the road were killed and four others were injured.
When Kim was caught by policemen, his blood-alcohol concentration was 0.182 percent, an intoxication level that is high enough to revoke a driver license.
Police will seek an arrest warrant to charge him with accidental homicide after further questioning. During the sobriety tests conducted until early on Friday morning, a total of 47 drivers had their licenses cancelled and 88 were suspended from driving.
Police said they will continue to carry out random sobriety tests until early next year as many drivers still take to the wheel after an evening of year-end boozing.
