The organizer of the TOEFL test for children will provide test takers with additional information as guidelines to help them choose appropriate books and study material.
The U.S.-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) said Thursday the young applicants of the test will receive the “Lexile Framework for Reading” to link their reading section scores from the exam with Lexile measures.
Test takers are able to use the Lexile measure to search for the right books to improve their reading skills.
“Linking a TOEFL Junior Reading section score with a Lexile measure helps students practice reading more effectively to improve their skills and better prepare them for advanced learning,” said Malbert Smith III, president of MetaMetrics. “Finding the right books that provide the right level of challenge for practice can be difficult.”
Created by MetaMetrics, a Lexile reader measure can range from beginning readers to advanced readers.
Higher Lexile measures represent a higher level of reading ability.
Students and parents can use this website (www.lexile.com/toefljunior) to access more information on Lexile measures and search for books and build custom reading lists. The website is currently offering the service in both English and Korean.
“ETS realizes that a student’s time is valuable and with all their studying, students don’t have the extra time or energy to search for books that can help improve their English reading skills,” says Tony Ostrander, Director of TOEFL Product Management for ETS.
“Having access to books suitably matched to their TOEFL Junior Reading score/Lexile measure is like having an electronic library at their fingertips.”
