President Lee Myung-bak expressed disappointment at North Korea’s defeat to Brazil in their Group G opener at the South Africa World Cup, his aides said Wednesday.
“It is too bad that the North Koreans lost. They should have won,” Lee was quoted as saying by the aides, hours after North Korea lost 2-1 to Brazil.
Lee looked sad when he talked about the defeat. He woke up early and watched the game, which ended at 5:30 a.m. (KST) on TV, the sources said.
“Lee wholeheartedly supported the North Korean team and wished them good luck at the World Cup,” said a presidential spokesman. “Inter-Korean relations have been worsening following the sinking of the warship Cheonan, but it is politics. As a compatriot, he really wanted them to win.”
Lee mentioned South Korea’s 2-0 win over Greece last Saturday in his televised address Monday, saying he hugged his granddaughter and jumped for joy when the referee blew the final whistle.
