A Seoul court fined an opposition legislator with a 1-million-won ($790) fine for causing a disturbance at a state funeral for former President Roh Moo-hyun.
Rep. Baek Won-woo, of the Democratic Party (DP) who was a close aide to Roh, shouted at President Lee Myung-bak to apologize as he was about to offer flowers at the altar. The prosecution had demanded 3 million won in fines.
Roh, Lee's immediate predecessor, committed suicide in the midst of a prosecution investigation into his family on suspicions of bribery. Roh's supporters accused the government of launching the probe for political purposes.
"The hosts of the state funeral are the people, regardless of their political views of former President Roh. The memory of the deceased and public peace are subject to legal protection," the Seoul Central District Court said in a ruling.
