Kwon Yun-ja / Yonhap |
Kwon Yun-ja, 71, the allegedly estranged wife of the fugitive and owner of the sunken ferry Sewol, is the third family member of Yoo facing detention. Prosecutors believe the measures against Yoo's family members may increase pressure on Yoo and his two sons, who have been on the run, to give themselves up.
The two people already arrested are Kwon's brother and CEO of Trigon Korea, Kwon Oh-kyun, and Yoo's elder brother, Yoo Byung-il.
Kwon was taken into custody Saturday at an apartment in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province, along with two women who were with her. The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office filed for arrest warrants against these two as well.
Kwon is president of Dalgubeol, a door-to-door sales company based in Daegu. She is suspected of damaging the firm by allowing cash to flow into businesses owned by Yoo and their eldest son, Yoo Dae-gyun.
She is the daughter of Kwon Shin-chan, a pastor who created the Salvation Sect with Yoo.
The prosecution is expected to seek a warrant to detain Yoo Byung-ho, who was taken into custody Sunday from his home in Daegu.
Byung-ho used to work as an auditor in a Semo affiliate called Saiso, and is suspected of getting the firm to pay billions of won to Yoo's family in consulting fees and for Yoo's photographs.
His daughter married singer and founder of JYP Entertainment Park Jin-young last October.
The effectiveness of the prosecution's approach to pressure Yoo and his sons by arresting family members is, however, in question.
Because Kwon is believed to have almost separated from Yoo, she is unlikely to know Yoo's whereabouts, Yonhap News reported. The mother of four children, she is known to be close to Dae-gyun.
