Local broadcaster MBC, which apologized recently over its inappropriate use of images and captions during its broadcast of the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, has been accused of belittling Korean judoka An Chang-rim, saying that his hard-won bronze medal was "not what we wanted."
최근 도쿄올림픽 개막식 방송 중 부적절한 이미지 사용과 자막으로 사과의 입장을 표명한 현지 방송사 MBC는 유도 국가대표 안창림 선수가 어렵사리 획득한 동메달에 "우리가 원했던 메달 색 아니지만"이라고 실언해 비난 받고 있다.
Right after An secured the bronze medal after beating Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan in the men's under-73-kilogram event on Monday, MBC's sportscaster Jeong Byung-moon said, "It was not the color (of medal) we wanted, but the player will be satisfied with his result given the sweat and tears he has shed over the past five years."
지난 월요일 유도 남자 73kg급 동메달 결정전에서 루스탐 오루조프(아제르바이잔)를 꺾고 동메달을 획득한 직후, MBC 정병문 스포츠캐스터는 "동메달은 우리가 원했던 색이 아니지만, 안 선수는 지난 5년간 흘려왔던 땀과 눈물에 대한 대가로 만족할 것이다"라고 말했다.
MBC commentator Cho Jun-ho, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, corrected him by saying, "Bronze is a precious color."
2012년 런던 올림픽에서 동메달을 획득한 MBC 유도 해설위원인 조준호 위원은 "동메달만으로도 소중한 결실이다"리고 덧붙이며 이를 바로잡았다.
Jeong's disparaging remark came only hours after MBC President Park Sung-jae made a public apology for undermining the "Olympic spirit."
정 캐스터의 실언은 박성제 MBC 사장이 "올림픽 정신"을 훼손한 것에 대해 대국민 사과를 한지 불과 몇 시간 지나지 않아서였다.
"As the chief executive of MBC's content, I offer my deepest apologies to the people who were hurt due to our reckless and careless broadcast and to viewers who were disappointed with us," he said during a press conference in Seoul.
박 사장은 서울에서 열린 기자회견에서 "MBC 콘텐츠 최고 책임자로서, 신중하지 못하고 부주의한 방송으로 상처받고 실망하신 시청자들께 머리 숙여 사죄드린다"고 말했다.
On Sunday, MBC also used an inappropriate caption, saying "Thank you Marin," in reference to Romanian football player Marius Marin, who scored an own goal in the men's group B match against Korea. In that match, Korea beat Romania 4-0.
한편 MBC는 지난 일요일 남자 B조 예선 대한민국 대 루마니아 경기에서 자책골을 넣은 루마니아 축구선수 마리우스 마린과 관련해 "고마워요 마린"이란 부적절한 자막을 사용한 바 있다. 해당 경기에서 한국이 루마니아를 상대로 4대0 대승을 거뒀다.
