[LIFESTYLE] Readers with special needs find help through easy-to-read books

Students in a "special classroom" were paying attention to their teacher explaining "The Ant and the Grasshopper," one of the popular Aesop's Fables, at a high school in Seoul in June 2022, while their peers in other classrooms were studying classic literature from the Joseon Dynasty and how Korea's judiciary system brings criminals to court.
지난해 6월 서울의 한 고등학교 ‘특별반' 학생들이 인기 있는 이솝 우화 중 하나인 ‘개미와 베짱이'를 설명하는 선생님에게 주의를 기울이는 한편, 다른 반 학생들은 조선시대의 고전 문학과 한국의 사법 제도가 범죄자들을 법정에 세우는 법을 배우고 있었다.

But in this special classroom, students with difficulties in reading and understanding, including those with dyslexia, were immersed in the fable and the lessons it entails. The textbook, specially made to cater to them, guided the instructor through a perfect discourse for the students to read and understand it as a book.
그러나 이 특별반에서는 난독증을 가진 학생들을 포함한 읽기 및 내용 이해가 어려운 학생들이 우화와 이와 관련된 수업에 몰두하고 있었다. 이들을 위해 특별히 제작된 교재 덕분에 교사는 완벽한 담화를 통해 학생들이 교재를 읽고 이해할 수 있도록 지도했다.

Such an accomplishment would be difficult for these students if they had to study the tiny fonts and longer texts of books being taught in other classrooms.
만약 읽기에 어려움을 겪는 학생들이 일반 교실에서 사용되는 작은 글씨와 긴 내용이 담긴 책으로 공부해야 한다면, 이 와 같은 성취는 어려웠을 것이다.

In a textbook, one student wrote down her thoughts about the fable.
한 여학생은 교재에 우화에 대한 자신의 생각을 적었다.

"The ant planned ahead and collected food during summer to live through the coming winter. Maybe I should prepare for my future just like the ant."
"개미는 다가오는 겨울을 나기 위해 미리 계획을 세우고 여름 동안 음식을 저장했다. 어쩌면 나도 개미처럼 미래를 준비해야 할지도 모른다."

Another student rooted for the grasshopper. "While the ant worked hard during the summer, the grasshopper did what it loved to do. He must have been happy," he wrote.
또 다른 학생은 배짱이를 응원했다. 이 남학생은 "개미가 여름에 열심히 일하는 동안, 배짱이는 자기가 좋아하는 일을 했다. 베짱이는 분명 행복했을 것"이라고 적었다.

The textbook, made by Peach Market, also asks students to describe the characteristics of the duo and which occupation they would be suited for in modern society. One student wrote that the ant would make a good delivery driver, athlete or a street cleaner because it is "physically strong," while the grasshopper would be an excellent singer, a composer or a K-pop idol, because of its "nature to spend time enjoying itself."
피치마켓이 만든 이 교재는 또 학생들이 개미와 베짱이의 특징과 이들이 현대 사회에서 어떤 직업에 적합할지를 묘사하도록 한다. 한 학생은 개미가 "신체적으로 강하기 때문에" 좋은 배달 기사, 운동선수 또는 환경미화원이 될 것이라고 적은 한편 배짱이는 "즐기면서 시간을 보내는 천성" 때문에 훌륭한 가수, 작곡가 또는 케이팝 아이돌이 될 것이라고 적었다.

"I found a new urge and willingness to teach these books to my students. It took a huge burden off my shoulders. Plus, the thought that I can discuss the books with the students makes me pretty excited," said Kim Ka-young, an instructor for those struggling with reading exercises harder than normal people. She started using books made by Peach Market.
일반적인 사람보다 독해에 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들을 지도하는 강사 김가영 씨는 "이 교재로 학생들을 가르치고 싶다는 새로운 의욕과 의지를 느꼈다. 이 교재는 큰 짐을 덜어주었다. 학생들과 교재를 가지고 토론할 수 있다는 생각에 매우 신이 난다"고 말했다. 김 씨는 피치마켓에서 만든 교재들을 사용하기 시작했다.

The biggest difference the publisher has brought to the classroom was that its materials made students participate in conversations, according to Kim. Before, with conventional textbooks, the topics they could understand were extremely limited.
김 씨에 의하면 이 출판사가 교실에 가져온 가장 큰 차이점은 학생들이 대화에 참여하게 만들었다는 점이었다. 기존 교재에는 독해에 어려움을 느끼는 학생들이 이해할 수 있는 주제가 극도로 제한되어 있었다.
