With travel limited, plane cafes take off in Thailand

With millions around the world stuck at home due to the pandemic, "plane cafes" in Thailand are offering customers the chance to pretend they are in the sky ― and the idea seems to have taken off.

팬데믹으로 인해 전 세계의 수많은 사람들이 집에 갇혀 있기에, 태국의 ‘비행기 카페'들은 사람들이 공중에 떠 있는 것 같은 기분을 손님들에게 제공한다. 그리고 이러한 카페는 금세 유행이 됐다.

On board a retired commercial jet in the coastal city of Pattaya, coffee drinkers make themselves comfy on first-class-style seats and pose for photos by the overhead lockers.

태국 해안도시 파타야에 있는 한 퇴역 여객기에 올라타면, 커피 애호가들은 일등석 자리에서 편안함을 느끼며 좌석 위 짐칸(오버헤드 빈) 아래서 사진 포즈를 취한다.

Boarding passes in hand, some "passengers" even opt for a tour of the cockpit.

손에는 탑승권(보딩패스)을 쥔 ‘승객'들은 조종석(칵핏) 구경을 선택하기도 한다.

"With this cafe I can sit in first class and also mess around in the cockpit pretending to be the captain of the plane," 26-year-old Thipsuda Faksaithong told AFP. "It's a lot of fun."

팁수다 팍사이통(26) 씨는 AFP통신과의 인터뷰에서 "이 카페에서 나는 일등석에 앉을 수 있고, 조종사가 된 것 마냥 조종석(칵핏)을 돌아다닐 수도 있다"며 "정말 재밌다"고 말했다.

Chalisa Chuensranoi, 25, said her visit was as good as any trip she had taken before the pandemic, which shuttered Thailand's borders in March.

찰리사 추엔스라노이(25) 씨는 3월에 팬데믹으로 태국의 국경이 닫히기 전에 다녔던 그 어떤 여행만큼이나 좋았다고 밝혔다.

"Sitting right here in the first-class section… really gives me the feeling of actually being on a plane, cruising through the air," she said.

"이곳의 일등석에 앉으면 정말 내가 하늘을 가르며 비행하는 기분이 든다"고 그녀는 설명했다.

태국 방콕의 타이항공 본사 안에 있는 또 다른 비행기 카페에는, 기내식을 무척 그리워한 것으로 보이는 배가 고픈 손님들이 승무원이 플라스틱 쟁반으로 서빙한 카르보나라 스파게티와 태국식 쇠고기 게걸스럽게 먹고 있다.

But for Intrawut Simapichet, 38, who came to the cafe with his wife and baby, the experience is about more than a meal.

부인과 아기를 데리고 이 카페를 찾은 인트라웃 시마피쳇(38) 씨는 이 경험은 단순히 식사 이상의 것이라고 말했다.

"Normally I'm a person who travels very often, and when we are forced to stay at home… it's kind of depressing," he said as fellow passengers posed with luggage by a fake airplane door. "The cafe relieves what's missing" (AFP)

다른 손님들이 비행기 문 모형 옆에서 여행용 가방과 함께 사진 포즈를 취하고 있는 동안 시마피쳇 씨는 "나는 여행을 정말 자주 다니는 사람인데, 요즘 어쩔 수 없이 집에 있어야 해서 우울감을 느낀다"라고 말하며 "이 카페는 그리운 감정을 덜어준다"고 덧붙였다.
