Rise of AI service could open new opportunities for Korean memory chipmakers
AI 서비스 부상, 한국 메모리 반도체에 새로운 기회 제공할 수도

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are expected to benefit from emerging artificial intelligence (AI) services such as ChatGPT due to surging demand at processing centers for high-performance memory chips that can handle more data as AI technology becomes increasingly widespread, according to industry officials and analysts, Sunday.
일요일 업계 관계자 및 분석가들은 AI(인공지능) 기술의 보편화로 인해 더 많은 데이터를 처리할 수 있는 고성능 메모리 반도체 센터에 대한 수요가 급증해 삼성전자와 SK하이닉스가 챗GPT 등 새롭게 떠오르는 AI 서비스의 수혜를 입을 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다.
ChatGPT is a chatbot or conversational AI service launched by U.S.-based AI company OpenAI last November. Unlike previous chat-based AI services, ChatGPT has seen an explosive increase in demand across the world because it feels like talking to a real person with deep knowledge in a diverse range of topics.
챗GPT는 지난해 11월 미국 AI 기업 오픈에이아이가 출시한 챗봇 또는 대화형 AI 서비스다. 챗GPT는 기존의 채팅 기반 AI 서비스와 달리 다양한 주제에 대해 깊은 지식을 가진 실제 사람과 대화하는 듯한 느낌 때문에 전 세계적으로 수요가 폭발적으로 증가하고 있다.
Experts said ChatGPT shows how AI can reach human-level capabilities through technological progress. The service has prompted IT giants such as Microsoft and Google to launch commercialized AI services.
전문가들은 챗GPT가 기술 발전을 통해 AI가 어떻게 인간 수준의 능력에 도달할 수 있는지 보여준다고 말했다. 이 서비스는 마이크로소프트와 구글과 같은 IT 거대기업이 상업화된 AI 서비스를 출시하도록 촉발했다.
They added that ChatGPT not only induces changes at IT companies, but also brings enormous benefits to memory semiconductor makers through the expansion of diverse kinds of AI-based applications, such as voice recognition, translation, autonomous driving and image classification.
전문가들은 챗GPT는 음성인식, 번역, 자율주행, 이미지 분류 등 다양한 AI 기반 애플리케이션 확장을 통해 IT 기업의 변화를 유도할 뿐만 아니라 메모리 반도체 업체에도 엄청난 혜택을 가져다 준다고 덧붙였다.
"Demand for memory chips for servers and data centers was driven by the increasing use of cloud computing services, but we expect a new market will be pioneered as AI services like ChatGPT will eventually increase the need to expand data centers to smoothly process enormous amounts of information," an official at a local chip company said on condition of anonymity.
국내 반도체 업체 관계자는 익명을 전제로 "클라우드 컴퓨팅 서비스 이용 증가가 서버 및 데이터센터용 메모리칩 수요를 견인했지만 챗GPT와 같은 AI 서비스가 결국 막대한 양의 데이터를 원활하게 처리하기 위해 데이터센터 확장 필요성이 커지면서 새로운 시장이 개척될 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다.
"Especially high-performance memory chips, such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) or processing-in-memory (PIM), will consequently increase."
"특히 고대역폭 메모리(HBM) 또는 메모리 내 처리(PIM)와 같은 고성능 메모리 칩이 결과적으로 증가할 것이다."
Samsung and SK hynix have already developed or supplied products to respond to the explosive growth of the memory semiconductor market for AI services. Market tracker Gartner recently estimated the size of the AI chip market to grow to $86.1 billion in 2026 from $22 billion in 2020.
삼성과 SK하이닉스는 이미 AI 서비스용 메모리 반도체 시장의 폭발적인 성장에 대응하기 위한 제품을 개발하거나 공급하고 있다. 시장조사업체 가트너는 최근 AI 반도체 시장 규모가 2020년 220억 달러에서 2026년 861억 달러로 성장할 것으로 추정했다.
