The brouhaha erupted after photos of Kim, a six-term lawmaker of the minor conservative Bareun Party, carelessly pushing his wheeled carrier toward his secretary at Gimpo International Airport went viral.
The photos were taken at an arrival gate Tuesday afternoon. Kim was walking out after a week-long trip to Japan. Emerging from the gate, he carelessly lets his green-wheeled carrier roll toward his approaching secretary, not looking at him. Many reporters awaiting Kim's arrival witnessed what critics described as an "authoritarian no-look pass." Some of them captured it with their cameras.
The behavior was in stark contrast to down-to-earth President Moon Jae-in's gentle treatment of his subordinates. He has impressed people since his inauguration with his attitude.
A user named "bkim9324" posted images of Kim's "no-look pass" on news-sharing website Reddit with the title: "Korean Politician Swag." The post topped the daily ranking and had 900 comments. "You can even see the guy bow while walking over to pick up the bag," a Reddit user commented while criticizing Kim's authoritarian attitude.
Kim's previous comment that "authoritarian politicians should be changed" attracted notice because of his "rude" pass. "He is the one who should change first," a netizen said.
Kim responded to reporters' questions about the incident in Seoul on Wednesday. He said: "I do not see what the problem is. Reporters should mind their own business or other important news."
