Seoul to take steps to reduce fine dust emissions

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will step up efforts to reduce fine dust emissions in the capital.

To that end, measures will be taken to reduce fine particles in the air, double the frequency of its road cleaning and tighten control of air pollutants from construction sites and diesel-powered vehicles, city officials said.

According to the Ministry of Environment, fine dust levels in Seoul remain higher than other mega cities around the world.

In addition to doubling the frequency of road cleaning with the use of water, the city will introduce a system to control fine dust on vacant lands, school playgrounds and the banks of the Han River, an official said.

The measures also call for tighter dust control at some 1,400 construction sites and the attachment of an emission control device to construction vehicles on a trial basis.
