A policeman has been indicted for trafficking drugs, receiving bribes and engaging in fraud and embezzlement.
According to the prosecution, the 47-year-old veteran policeman, identified only as Lee, met a drug user, whose surname is also Lee, at a restaurant and received 3 million won ($2,608) in return for covering up his crime in 2007, while the officer was working for the drug investigation team at Songpa Police Station in Seoul.
The policeman, while working at Yongsan Police Station in Seoul this year, allegedly asked the drug user Lee to pay him 30 million won in June in return for covering up for Lee, who was wanted by the prosecutors’ office on charges of drug trafficking.
Instead of arresting Lee, the policeman had dinner with him and his colleagues. After dinner, they moved to a bar where Lee paid the entire 800,000 won bill and gave the policeman 3.2 million won as a kickback.
In August, the officer supplied Lee with 10 grams of methamphetamine and received 4.5 million won. He also offered Lee some tips on how to avoid drug testing.
To avoid detection, the policeman received the bribes through a package delivered by a quick service center employee.
When Lee was apprehended by police from another station, the officer went to visit him and told him how to cope with the investigation. The officer continued to protect Lee by submitting another person’s urine for testing so that Lee could avoid detention.
The policeman also introduced a lawyer to Lee and embezzled tens of millions of won from the money paid to the lawyer.
