The Korean peninsula has moved up to 5 centimeters east as a direct result of the destructive Japanese earthquake, the Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) reported Wednesday.
Dokdo has moved 5.16 centimeters, the largest in the Korean territory, and nearby Ulleungdo 4.07 centimeters, according to the institute, which measured the movement through national network of the global positioning system (GPS) in a preliminary check. “The two islands closest to the epicenter may have been affected even more,” a spokesman said.
Sokcho has moved 3.4centimeters, the largest on the peninsula, followed by Mt Sobaek with 2.43 centimeters. The smallest movement has been seen on Jeju Island with 0.89 centimeters. Other major locations checked are Daejeon, Koheung, Mokpo and Miryang, which have moved by up to 2 centimeters.
He said that Korea and Japan have been separated by more than 2 meters because of the quake. The U.S. Geological Survey earlier announced that Japan moved about 2.4 meters east as a result of the quake.
Researchers at the institute said that it is still unknown if the move will be temporary or long lasting. They have emphasized the need to further observe the situation.
This is the first case for researchers to directly calculate the movement of the peninsula through the information collected from the national GPS network.
한국 동쪽으로 5㎝ 이동
일본 대지진으로 인해 한반도의 위치가 최대 5㎝까지 이동한 것으로 분석됐다.
한국천문연구원(원장 박석재)은 지난 11일 발생한 일본 대지진의 영향으로 가 최대 5㎝까지 이동한 것으로 분석됐다고 16일 밝혔다.
한국천문연구원의 국내 GPS 관측망 자료 분석에 따르면 지진 발생 직후 한반도 본토지각이 1㎝에서 3.4㎝까지 동쪽으로 이동했으며, 특히 진원지와 가까운 독도와 울릉도의 경우 상대적으로 더 영향을 받아 각각5.16㎝, 4.07㎝ 이동한 것으로 나타났다.
대전이 1.97 cm 수원이 2.06cm, 제주도가 0.89cm 북쪽 3mm 각각 이동했다.
이 결과는 이번 강진에 의해 일본이 한반도로부터 동쪽으로 2m 이상 멀어졌으며, 인접한 한반도의 지각 또한 적지 않은 영향을 받았다는 것을 나타낸다. 미국 지질 조사국은 이에 앞서 일본이 동쪽으로 2.4m 이동했다고 발표했다
이와 같은 지진에 의한 한반도 지각변위가 일시적인 것인지 또는 지속적인 것인지에 대한 추가적인 감시가 필요하다고 한국천문연구원은 밝혔다.
