Around this time every year, Seokchon Lake in southeastern Seoul becomes a major attraction for millions of visitors because of a giant floating balloon.
It started with "Rubber Duck" in 2014 ― Lotte Group came up with the idea in desperate efforts to water down widespread fears that its newly constructed skyscraper near the lake might have critical structural flaws ― and then settled as an annual event with "Super Moon" in 2016 and "Sweet Swan" in 2017.
This year's protagonist is "Kaws," a human-shaped balloon with outstretched hands and legs. It is 28 meters from head to toe and 25 meters from the tip of one hand to the end of the other. It was crafted by American pop artist Kaws, whose real name is Brian Donnelly.
When it is floated, its shape will be like a giant man resting on the lake's surface, with outstretched arms and legs.
The display begins Thursday and continues through August 19.
"The balloon's posture reflects people's desire to take an uninterrupted rest after escaping from their daily hectic life," a Lotte official said.
