The government says it will stop sex crimes involving secret cameras, but there has been little progress. Yonhap

By Jung Hae-myoung

Despite the growing controversy about "hidden cameras" used to film women intimately, the cameras are not illegal and are readily available at markets. Two months ago, the government declared war on secret camera sex crimes.

According to E-Daily online paper, the cameras are embedded in products such as pens, glasses, USBs, and battery chargers, which are certified by government.

The relevant law only checks the technical aspect of the cameras, not their potential criminal applications such as recording private or intimate situations. Therefore, it is hard to catch people using hidden cameras for criminal purposes.

Rep. Jin Sunmee of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea proposed in January that the relevant law should be revised requiring owners of potential hidden cameras to register them on an official database.

However, any possible change is still pending.
