Residents of a Hyundai I-Park apartment complex in southern Seoul which a helicopter owned by LG Electronics crashed into last year have still not received financial compensation from the company, according to a tenants' group Sunday.
The helicopter crashed in dense fog into the high-end apartment building located in Samseong-dong, Southern Seoul, in November 2013. Both pilots aboard were killed. The helicopter collided into the upper section of the 38-story apartment, but no one in the building or on the ground was hurt.
A group representing residents of four apartments that were damaged and the electronics firm have been in negotiations for the past four months. However, no resident has received damages so far because of a failure to agree on the amount of compensation to be paid.
The committee said they have found common ground on the costs of reconstructing the outer walls and interiors, but the two sides remain at odds over the amount of compensation due for psychological damage.
Residents say LG Electronics remains reluctant to offer adequate compensation.
"We've asked for 300 million won (per damaged house), about 10 percent of the market price for the apartment because the accident apparently pulled down the apartment price, but LG Electronics have only suggested 100 million won for compensation, which we can't accept at all," said a member of the committee, declining to be named.
The member said that as the negotiations have not produced an agreement, work to repair the damaged apartments has not started yet, forcing the families of the four households to continue living in a hotel near the apartment.
An official of LG Electronics said, "We can't disclose the details of the negotiations for the compensation, as it is still ongoing."
The helicopter was insured by LIG Insurance and there is expected to be a maximum payment of $11 million; $10 million compensation to be divided among the residents and $400,000 for the families of the two deceased pilots.
