'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' actor Park Eun-bin opens up

Actress Park Eun-bin, who set foot in the entertainment industry at the age of four as a child model, has had her fair share of projects throughout her 26-year acting career, working in diverse genres such as the feelgood 2016 series "Hello, My Twenties!" and the 2021 period romance "The King's Affection."
네 살 때 키즈 모델로 연예계에 발을 들인 배우 박은빈은 2016년 코미디 드라마 ‘청춘시대', 2021년 사극 로맨스 드라마 ‘연모' 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 연기 인생 26년간 충분한 작품 활동을 해왔다.

But it wasn't until this year that the actress finally found a sensational role — as a genius lawyer who is on the autism spectrum in "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," rising to massive global prominence.
하지만 올해가 되어서야 선풍적인 인기를 끈 역을 만난 박은빈은 드라마 ‘이상한 변호사 우영우'에서 자폐 스펙트럼이 있는 천재 변호사 역을 연기해 세계적인 명성을 얻게 되었다.

ENA's heartwarming legal series "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," about an autistic lawyer called Woo Young-woo (Park) tackling challenges in and beyond the courtroom, has been an enormous hit, ending with its highest viewership rating of 17.5 percent on Aug. 18. It also topped Netflix's official non-English Top 10 chart only a week after its premiere and has been claiming spots for four weeks now.
법정 안팎의 여러 도전에 맞서는 자폐증 변호사 우영우(박은빈)를 그린 ENA 감동 법률 드라마 ‘이상한 변호사 우영우'는 8월 18일 최고 시청률 17.5%로 종영하며 대히트를 쳤다. 넷플릭스 공식 비영어권 톱10 차트에서도 공개 일주일만에 1위를 차지한 후 4주째 정상을 지키고 있다.

Despite garnering huge popularity with her irresistible performances in the title role, Park shared that it took a lot of courage to play a character who is on the autism spectrum, leading her to turn it down at first.
주인공 역을 통해 흡인력 있는 연기를 보여줬지만 박은빈은 자폐 스팩트럼을 가진 캐릭터 연기에 큰 용기가 필요했고 처음에는 캐스팅 제의를 거절했다고 털어놓았다.

"It felt like the series wasn't something that I should approach lightly. The series seemed like a good one, but as an actor it was overwhelming," she said in an interview with The Korea Times at a cafe in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, Monday.
박은빈은 월요일 서울 강남구의 한 카페에서 진행된 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "가볍게 접근할 수 있는 작품이 아니라고 생각했다. 좋은 작품이라고 생각했지만 배우로서는 부담이 컸다"고 말했다.

"When I read scripts, I would picture it in my head and have the idea on how I can portray the character … But with this script, I couldn't imagine the tone (of the character) and how I should portray her, so I was worried if I could do it well."
"보통 대본을 읽을 때 머릿속에 어떻게 캐릭터를 표현할 수 있을지 상상하며 감을 잡는다 … 하지만 이번 대본을 볼 때는 (인물의) 분위기와 우영우를 어떻게 표현해야 하는지 잘 그려지지 않아서 잘 해낼 수 있을지 걱정됐다."

She added that she started opening up to taking the role after meeting with the series' director Yoo In-sik and writer Moon Ji-won, who insisted that she would be the perfect fit for the character.
박은빈의 우영우 역 소화에 대한 강한 확신을 보인 유인식 감독 및 문지원 작가와의 미팅 후에야 해당 역에 마음을 열기 시작했다고 덧붙였다.

"Frankly, when I was on my way to meet them, I was going to turn it down in person. But they gave me a good talk," she said. "I've always created my role alone. It was easier and more comfortable that way. But with this series, I felt I shouldn't do it alone … The director and the writer told me that everyone will help me through it and asked me if I can give them a chance to make that together, which made me open up to it."
박은빈은 "솔직히 미팅을 하러 가는 길에는 캐스팅을 직접 거절할 마음이었다. 하지만 감독님과 작가님이 나를 격려해줬다"고 말했다. "항상 혼자 배역을 구상했다. 이 방식이 더 쉽고 수월했다. 하지만 이번 드라마는 혼자 하면 안 되겠다는 생각이 들었다 … 감독님과 작가님은 모두가 나를 도와 함께 역할을 완성할 것이라며 같이 우영우를 만들 기회를 주겠냐고 물어봐 주셨고 마음을 열게 되었다."

Park said that she only had about two weeks to prepare for the role right after wrapping up her previous role in "The King's Affection."
박은빈은 ‘연모'라는 작품에서 전 역할을 마무리한 후 우영우 역할을 위한 준비기간이 단 2주였다고 말했다.

"I looked for a fast and efficient way to prepare for my character. In my opinion, Woo isn't a character based on something, but has the originality within this Woo Youngwoo's universe created in the series," she said, adding that she refrained from studying other autistic characters previously portrayed in the media.
박은빈은 "이 캐릭터를 준비할 빠르고 효율적인 방법을 찾아보았다. 우영우는 무언가에 기반을 둔 캐릭터가 아니라 드라마 속 우영우의 우주 안에서 독창성을 가진다고 생각한다"며 기존에 미디어에서 다뤄진 자폐증 인물들에 대한 연구를 자제했다고 덧붙였다.
