Yeoju Ceramic Festival captivating visitors

Since 1990, Yeoju Ceramic Festival has established itself as one of the nation's leading local festivals, exhibiting unique and high quality ceramic artwork and products.

1990년부터 시작된 여주도자기축제는 특별하고 고품질의 도자기 예술품과 제품으로 대한민국의 가장 성공적인 지역 축제중 하나로 자리매김했다.

And marking its 31st edition, the annual event ― designed to promote the excellence of its ceramics, develop the ceramic industry in the Gyeonggi provincial city and, furthermore, raise awareness for Yeoju ceramics ― is continuing its successful run, attracting droves of visitors.

여주 도자기의 우수성을 알릴 뿐만 아니라 도자기 산업을 발전시키고, 나아가 여주 도자기의 인지도를 높이는 여주도자기축제는 올해로 31회째를 맞으며 수많은 방문객의 눈길을 끌고 있다.

Yeoju is one of the regions where quality ceramics have been made due to the area's rich soil, which is an important component of the process. Yeoju has been producing ceramics ever since the Goryeo Kingdom that ruled ancient Korea from 918 to 1392, playing an important role in developing the early ceramic industry.

여주는 도자기 제조공정에서 중요한 요소인 비옥한 토지를 가진 덕에 고품질의 도자기가 만들어지는 지역 중 하나다. 여주는 918년부터 1392년까지 고대 한국을 지배했던 고려 왕조 때부터 도자기를 생산해 왔으며, 초기 도자기 산업 발전에 중요한 역할을 했다.

The festival that will run through Sunday at a park near Silleuk Temple drew in 17,000 people on the opening day on April 27.

일요일까지 신륵사 일대에서 열리는 여주도자기축제는 개막 당일인 지난달 27일에만 17,000명의 관람객이 찾아왔다.

"Yeoju's ceramic ware has a long history, as its quality was even recorded in geography records during the King Sejong era," Yeoju Mayor Lee Hang-jin said at the opening ceremony. "The ceramic masters' passion and dedication have helped the region hold onto its reputation."

이항진 여주시장은 개막식에서 "여주 도자기는 세종실록지리지에도 기록되었을 정도로 깊은 역사성을 가지고 있다"고 말하며 "뛰어난 도예인들의 열정과 헌신이 있었기에 여주가 도자기에 대한 명성을 이어올 수 있었다"고 덧붙였다.

Amid a growing appetite for live experiences, this year's event has added more hands-on programs to its repertoire.

라이브 체험에 대한 욕구가 높아지고 있는 가운데, 올해의 도자기축제는 기존 레퍼토리에 더 많은 체험 프로그램을 추가했다.

Along with the making and coloring programs, a "ceramic breaking" event that has established itself as a signature program in the pottery event is definitely something not to miss out on. Participants can throw flawed and unsalable ceramic pieces at a wall to break them into pieces.

도자기 제작과 채색 프로그램과 함께 이 행사의 대표 프로그램으로 자리매김한 '도자기 깨기' 행사도 빼놓을 수 없다. 참가자들은 흠이 있어 팔 수 없는 도자기를 벽에 던져 산산조각낼 수 있다.

In addition to those experience programs, a workshop featuring three veteran potters and four young artists will be held on Saturday and Sunday, during which they showcase the ceramic-making.

이러한 체험 프로그램에 더해, 토요일과 일요일에 3명의 베테랑 도예가와 4명의 젊은 예술가가 참여하는 워크숍이 열리며 도자기 제조를 직접 선보일 예정이다.

The festival has served as a venue allowing people to purchase a variety of celadon products at cheaper prices than in the market by offering special discounts. On the sidelines of the festival, a total of 92 booths are set up to sell ceramics.

이번 축제는 다양한 청자를 특별 할인해 시중보다 저렴하게 구매할 수 있는 장으로 자리 잡았다. 축제 현장에는 도자기를 파는 92개의 부스가 마련되어 있다.

The highlight of the event may be an exhibition putting ceramic artworks by master craftsmen, including those designated as national intangible cultural assets, on display, ― an event providing a rare chance for visitors.

이번 행사의 하이라이트는 국가무형문화재로 지정된 장인들의 도자기 작품 전시가 될 것으로 보인다.

Those who plan to visit the festival can take an intercity bus to Yeoju Terminal at Dong Seoul Terminal in eastern Seoul and then transfer to a local bus bound for Silleuk Temple at Yeoju Bus Terminal or take a cab to the festival venue.

축제에 방문하려는 사람들은 서울 동서울터미널에서 시외버스를 타고 여주터미널로 간 뒤, 신륵사 행 시내버스로 갈아타거나 축제장까지 택시를 탈 수 있다.
