When it comes to household names of Japanese tourist destinations, Sapporo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo may come to mind for the average Korean.
일본의 유명 관광지를 말한다면, 한국인 대부분이 삿포로, 오사카, 후쿠오카, 도쿄를 떠올릴 것이다.
However, Takanari Yamada, executive director of the Japan National Tourism Organization's (JNTO) Seoul office, says they are only a fraction of the sightseeing spots in his country that he believes is full of attractive yet unknown destinations that are sure to entice Korean travelers.
그러나 야마다 타카나리 일본정부관광국(JNTO) 서울사무소 소장은 이러한 관광지는 극히 일부분이며 일본은 한국인 관광객을 유혹할 확실한 매력이 넘치는 관광지로 가득 차 있다고 말한다.
"Most Koreans tend to travel to only well-known places such as Osaka, Sapporo, Kyushu and Tokyo. For people who have already visited Japan many times, I would recommend eastern Hokkaido," the 48-year-old said in an interview with The Korea Times.
48세의 그는 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "한국인 대부분은 오사카, 삿포로, 규슈, 도쿄 등 잘 알려진 곳만을 여행하는 경향이 있다. 이미 일본을 여러 번 방문한 사람들에게, 홋카이도 동부를 추천하고 싶다"고 말했다.
Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands, is already one of the most popular travel destinations for Koreans thanks to its capital, Sapporo.
일본의 주섬 중 최북단인 홋카이도는 이미 수도인 삿포로 덕분에 한국인들에게 가장 인기 있는 여행지로 꼽힌다.
However, he regretted that Koreans traveling to Hokkaido fail to fully enjoy the charms of the island as their itineraries are all about Sapporo.
하지만 그는 홋카이도를 여행하는 한국인들이 모두 삿포로가 목적지이기에 섬의 매력을 충분히 누리지 못하는 것에 대해 안타까워했다.
"They only go to southern Hokkaido, including Sapporo, but I would recommend another side of Hokkaido in the east, full of natural attractions such as lakes, mountains and wildlife," Yamada said.
야마다 소장은 "한국인 관광객들은 삿포로가 있는 남부 홋카이도에만 가는데, 호수나 산, 야생동물과 같은 자연적인 볼거리가 가득한 홋카이도 동부를 추천하고 싶다"고 전했다.
