Evolving from platform operator to facilitator

The way consumers purchase products has changed drastically over the past few decades, from door-to-door salesmen and billboard ads to digital advertisements.
방문판매와 옥외 광고판에서 디지털 광고까지, 지난 수십 년 동안 소비자들이 상품을 구매하는 방식은 급격히 변화해왔다.

One noticeable trend seen both in the e-commerce and retail industries during the COVID-19 pandemic is the meteoric growth of online consumer-to-consumer (C2C) platforms. As a marketing term, C2C e-commerce is considered a model in which one consumer sells goods or services to other consumers online. It has become one of the four mainstream e-commerce business models today.
코로나19 팬데믹 동안 전자상거래와 소매 산업에서 뚜렷이 보였던 트렌드는 온라인 개인 간 거래 (C2C) 플랫폼의 눈에 띄는 성장이다. 마케팅 용어인 C2C 전자상거래는 온라인에서 한 소비자가 다른 소비자에게 재화나 서비스를 판매하는 모델로 여겨진다. 오늘날 C2C는 주요 전자상거래 비즈니스 모델 네 개 중 하나가 되었다.

Despite the pandemic, business-to-consumer (B2C) marketplaces were displaying sound financial performance with Amazon and other top-tier B2C platform operators enjoying revenue and profit growth. However, a lesser known development has been the spectacular rise of C2C marketplaces as the amount of transaction volume, largely involving secondhand products, has soared.
팬데믹에도 불구하고 기업과 개인 간 거래 (B2C) 시장은 아마존과 최상급의 B2C 기업들이 수익 및 이익 증가를 즐기며 건실한 재무 성과를 보였다. 그러나 중고 제품을 다수 포함한 C2C 시장 거래량이 급등하며 극적인 상승을 보인 해당 시장의 성장은 덜 알려져 있다.

"I am a true believer in the power of in-person interactions. Location-based in-person communities offer a chance for people to share their preferred habits, to learn new things, to meet and connect with others who have the same objectives. Danggeun Market is aiming to evolve from a platform for secondhand goods to a trusted facilitator connecting people according to location and communities," its co-founder and co-CEO Kim Jae-hyun said in a recent interview at the company's head office in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul.
김재현 당근마켓 공동 설립자 겸 공동 대표는 최근 서울 남쪽 서초동에 있는 당근마켓 본사에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 "나는 개인 간 상호작용의 힘을 믿는 사람이다. 위치를 기반으로 한 개인 간 공동체는 사람들에게 서로가 선호하는 취미를 공유하고, 새로운 것을 배우고, 같은 목적을 가진 다른 사람을 만나 연결할 수 있는 기회를 제공했다. 당근마켓은 중고 거래 제품을 위한 플랫폼에서 지역과 공동체에 따라 사람들을 연결하는 믿을 만한 조력자로 진화하는 것을 목표로 삼았다"고 전했다.

The key responsibility of a facilitator is to build up relevant processes and to create conditions in which parties involved could be satisfied to help them achieve their desired output. Simply put, what a facilitator does is to come up with a plan, then guide and handle various group events to make sure that a group's common purposes are met satisfactorily with a high level of participation, said Kim.
조력자로서 가지는 주요 책임은 적절한 절차를 만들어내고 관련 당사자들이 바라는 결과를 성취하기 위해 이들이 만족할 수 있는 환경을 만들어내는 것이다. 김 대표는 간단히 말해 조력자가 하는 일은 계획을 제시하고, 한 집단이 가지는 공동의 목적이 높은 참여율을 통해 만족스럽게 충족될 수 있도록 다양한 집단의 일을 안내하고 관리하는 것이라고 전했다.

By stressing that in-person communities are the core factor behind an improved awareness of brand advocacy, the executive said Danggeun Market is on track to expand its business scope to ensure that its users are functioning well on its mobile platform.
브랜드를 지지하는 관심이 증가한 이면에는 개인 간 소통이 주요 요인이었다는 것을 강조한 김 대표는 당근마켓 사용자가 플랫폼 내에서 잘 활동하고 있는지를 보장하기 위해 업무 영역 확대를 진행하고 있다고 전했다.

Currently, unlike Coupang and Woowa Brothers, which are engaged in commerce and operate a quick-delivery service, Danggeun Market offers accessibility for consumers to fresh local produce delivery and daily-necessity services including cleaning, education and real estate brokerage, all within a four to six kilometers, cutting costs in the process.
상거래에 종사하며 빠른 배송 서비스를 운영하는 쿠팡 및 우아한 형제들과 달리, 당근마켓은 소비자에게 4-6km 내의 현지 신석 식품 배송과 청소, 교육, 부동산 거래를 비롯한 생활 필수 서비스에 대한 접근을 용이하게 해 비용을 절감했다.
