Local governments here are collecting nuts from roadside ginkgo trees before they fall naturally, following continuous complaints every autumn about the pungent stench released when they are crushed on the streets.
은행나무 열매들이 거리에서 으깨질 때 내뿜는 자극적인 악취에 대한 민원이 매 가을마다 계속 발생하자 지자체가 열매들이 자연스럽게 떨어지기 전에 열매들을 수확하고 있다.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government, along with 25 district offices in the capital, organized a "ginkgo collection taskforce" and initiated an early harvest from the ginkgo trees, starting Sept. 15, at a cost of 242 million won ($202,697).
서울시는 25개 구청과 함께 ‘은행 열매 채취 기동반'을 설치해 9월 15일부터 예산 2억 4,200만원을 들여 익지 않은 은행을 조기 채취하고 있다.

Major cities in other parts of the country, including Suwon and Goyang in Gyeonggi Province, Chuncheon and Gangneung in Gangwon Province, and Busan are also taking similar measures to deal with the ginkgo smell.

The government of Chuncheon adopted mechanical tree shakers, which shorten the nut harvest time from 20 minutes ― for workers doing this manually ― to only two minutes.
춘천시는 수실류 진동 수확기를 사용하여 노동자 한 명이 수동으로 20분을 소요했던 은행 수확을 2분으로 줄였다.
The collected nuts go through a safety test at the Public Health and Environment Research Institute, and are donated to senior citizen or welfare facilities.
수확된 열매는 서울시 보건환경연구원에서 검사를 거쳐 경로당이나 사회복지시설 등에 기부된다.
According to the Korea Forest Service, ginkgo trees are the most common roadside trees here and account for 12 percent of the total 8.25 million planted on streets.
산림청에 따르면 은행나무는 국내 가로수 825만 그루 중 12퍼센트로 가장 흔한 가로수이다.
Despite growing complaints over the smell, the trees provide several benefits in urban settings.
악취로 인한 불만 증가에도 불구하고 은행나무는 도시 환경에서 다양한 이익을 제공한다.
"Ginkgo trees require little water, don't easily catch fire, resist harsh winter weather and offer beautiful autumn colors. Most of all, they can absorb city pollution including sulfurous acid gases and fine dust, making them suitable for planting along city streets," an official from the Urban Forest and Landscape Division of the Korea Forest Service told The Korea Times.
산림청 도시숲경관과 관계자는 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "은행나무는 물이 덜 필요하고 불에 덜 붙으며 혹독한 겨울 날씨를 견디고 아름다운 가을 풍경을 제공한다. 무엇보다도 이들은 아황산가스와 미세먼지를 비롯한 도시 오염 물질을 흡수할 수 있는데, 이런 점은 은행나무를 거리에 따라 심는 것을 적합하게 만든다"고 전했다.
Some suggest planting only male trees, but it used to be difficult to distinguish whether a tree was male or female until the first harvest, which happens after about 20 years of growth.
일각에서는 수나무만을 심자는 주장도 나오고 있으나 나무를 심고 20년이 지나 첫 수확을 할 때 나무의 암수를 구분하는 것은 어렵다.
As a result, both male and female trees were planted in urban areas. However, these days the gender of trees can be determined before being planted via DNA testing.
그 결과 도시 지역에는 암나무와 수나무를 모두 심었다. 그러나 최근에는 나무를 심기 전 유전자 검사를 통해 나무의 성별을 확인할 수 있다.
