Marathon runner Hwang Young-jo will tie the knot in early December, the 41-year-old announced to local media Monday.
The gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics will marry a woman he met through a friend. The date for the ceremony has yet to be determined, he said.
Hwang’s bride-to-be is a teacher who studied computer engineering at Ewha Womans University.
Born in 1960 in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, Hwang is fondly called “the hero of Montjuic” by many Koreans. Aside from winning in Barcelona in 1992, Hwang also topped the podium at the 1991 Summer Universiade in Sheffield, England and the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan.
He currently serves as marathon coach of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation and technical specialist for the Korea Association of Athletics Federation (KAAF).
The star is also known for his volunteer work with a group of Olympic medalists.
