Professor Kim Byoung-chul of the food science department has been named the 18th president of Korea University, Wednesday. He will take office next March for four years, succeeding Lee Ki-su.
The 61-year-old, a graduate from Seoul National University in animal husbandry in 1976, gained a master’s degree from Korea University and went to Germany in 1980 for his doctorate degree at the University of Gottingen.
It is the first time that a professor from a natural science department has been appointed as the president of the school.
“I think I have been assigned a mission to invigorate the natural science field. I will come forward with steps to boost our research capability,” Kim told reporters.
Kim said he will suggest the government increase state subsidies to private universities in return for strengthening audits of schools.
Kim worked for the International Congress of Meat Science & Technology as a counseling member between 2007 and 2010. He is currently serving as vice chairman of the Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resources.
