Rep. Lee Hye-hoon of the Bareun Party will lead the Korea Britain Society (KBS) for the next three years, succeeding Park Jin, a former three-term lawmaker and chairman of the Korean-American Association, the KBS said Monday.

The KBS, which was established in the early 1950s to promote understanding and friendship between Korea and the United Kingdom, held an annual general meeting last week to appoint its new head.

"It is a great honor and pleasure for me to build this meaningful relationship with the KBS," the 52-year-old three-term lawmaker said.

"Today, we are experiencing a turbulent period. Faced with numerous pressing policy issues, I feel a greater sense of responsibility than ever before as a national politician. Indeed, the challenges that our nation is facing in the areas of foreign affairs, security, and economy are unprecedentedly grave.

"At this critical juncture, the KBS should work more closely than ever to promote the mutual development of our two nations and help us overcome the internal and external challenges we face."

A graduate of Seoul National University, Lee worked for RAND Corporation as a researcher after being awarded her Ph.D. at UCLA. She was also a professor at the University of Leicester for two years when her husband taught at Cambridge.

"Personally, Britain has always held a meaningful place in my heart," she said.

Outgoing KBS President Park has led the KBS since 2005.

Based on his contagious passion and wide human networks, Park is said to have dramatically improved the bilateral relationship between Korea and the U.K. while heading the society over the past 12 years.

To appreciate his tremendous contributions to the development of the KBS, the organization presented him with a plaque during last week's yearly meeting.

"Park has put forth great efforts to promote the ties between Korea and the U.K. He contributed to the KBS in so many areas," a KBS member said. "Rep. Lee is expected to further advance the already-good relationship between the two countries."
