One out of seven students are harassed through their mobile phones, by receiving insulting text messages and victimized in malicious jokes, a study showed.
Professor Jeon Shin-hyun from Korea Cyber University and Professor Lee Seong-sik from Soongshil University asked 718 students in Seoul if they had experienced bullying through their cell phones, and 13 percent, or 98 students, answered that they had.
The study found out that the motives for such behavior was mostly for entertainment and cruel pleasure. Most students bullied their peers because “it was fun,” followed by reasons such as anger they felt during everyday life and also because they wanted to have some type of control over others.
“Bullying through cell phones is different from ordinary bullying as it occurs to derive simply pleasure and entertainment, not due to anger, control or exclusion. Necessary measures must be taken as soon as possible,” Jeon said.
