Corgi YouTube star Baek-ho's human owner Kang Seung-yeon, 32, is a regular donor to charities supporting abandoned animals.
유튜브 스타 웰시코기 백호의 견주 강승연 씨(32)는 유기견 후원 단체의 정기 후원자이다.
Kang creates and uploads videos of her daily life with Baek-ho on her YouTube and social media channels and donates all of the related income to animal welfare causes.
강 씨는 유튜브와 소셜 미디어 채널에 자신과 백호의 일상을 담은 영상을 제작해 게시하고 이에 대한 모든 수입은 동물 복지 차원에서 전액 기부한다.
Over 128,000 animal lovers have subscribed to Baek-ho's YouTube channel, "Baek-ho Next Door," while over 640,000 people follow him on Twitter and Instagram combined.
12만 8천명이 넘는 동물 애호가들이 백호의 유튜브 채널 ‘이웃집의 백호'를 구독하는 한편 총 64만명이 넘는 사람들이 강 씨의 유튜브 채널과 인스타그램을 팔로우하고 있다.
Baek-ho was on the cover of the April edition of Big Issue Korea, and before the pandemic used to have a regular "fan walk" with 300 to 400 subscribers.
백호는 빅이슈코리아 4월호 표지를 장식했고 코로나19 팬데믹 이전에는 ‘백호 산책회'를 기획해 300~400명의 구독자들과 만나곤 했다.
"It started out as something very personal in 2015 — an online diary to look back when Baek-ho passes and a backup folder of his photos and videos in case I lose my phone," Kang told The Korea Times. "I didn't know back then that Baek-ho would be so famous."
강 씨는 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "지난 2015년 정말 개인적인 이유로 채널을 시작했다. 백호가 떠난 뒤 돌아볼 온라인 일기장, 휴대전화를 잃어버릴 경우를 대비한 사진, 동영상이 담긴 백업 폴더용이었다. 당시에는 백호가 이렇게 유명해질 줄은 몰랐다"고 전했다.
Kang is not sure why the channel became such a success, but says she always tries to portray Baek-ho's life with honesty.
강 씨는 자신의 채널이 성공하게 된 이유를 알지 못하지만 백호의 삶을 진솔하게 그려내기 위해 노력한다고 밝혔다.
"In my videos, we sometimes have a fight when Baek-ho makes a mess or we go to veterinary clinics for medical check-ups. Baek-ho may not always be as cute as people expect pets to be, but I want to show how animal friends go through the joys and sorrows of life with us, as naturally as possible," Kang said.
강 씨는 "영상에서 백호가 엉망을 만들어 놓거나 검진을 위해 동물 병원에 갈 때 종종 싸우곤 한다. 백호는 사람들이 기대하는 것만큼 매번 귀엽지 않을 수 있지만 반려동물들이 우리와 함께 삶의 기쁨과 슬픔을 겪는지 최대한 자연스럽게 보여주고 싶다"고 덧붙였다.
Kang has been donating all of the revenues from her YouTube channel and Baek-ho calendars to no-kill shelters around the country since 2015. About three tons of pet food, boxes of blankets and other necessities are sent in Baek-ho's name twice a year.
강 씨는 유튜브 채널과 백호 달력 굿즈로 얻은 수익 전부를 전국 유기견 보호소에 기부하고 있다. 약 3톤에 달하는 사료, 담요들, 그리고 다른 필수품들이 1년에 두 번 백호의 이름으로 보내진다.
