Fauci predicts US Omicron outbreak ‘turnaround' soon

COPENHAGEN (AFP) — The Omicron variant has moved the COVID-19 pandemic into a new phase and could bring it to an end in Europe, the WHO Europe director said Sunday.
코펜하겐 (AFP) — 오미크론 변이는 코로나19 팬데믹을 새로운 국면으로 이동시켰고, 일요일 WHO 유럽 사무소장은 오미크론이 코로나19를 유럽에서 끝낼 수도 있다고 말했다.
"It's plausible that the region is moving toward a kind of pandemic endgame," Hans Kluge told AFP in an interview, adding that Omicron could infect 60 percent of Europeans by March.
한스 클루게는 AFP와의 인터뷰에서 "유럽은 일종의 팬데의 종말을 향해 움직이고 있다는 말은 그럴 듯하다"며 오미크론은 3월까지 유럽인의 60%를 감염시킬 수도 있다고 덧붙였다.
Once the current surge of Omicron sweeping across Europe subsides, "there will be for quite some weeks and months a global immunity, either thanks to the vaccine or because people have immunity due to the infection, and also lowering seasonality."
유럽을 휩쓸고 있는 현재 오미크론의 급증이 잠잠해지면, "세계적 면역력이 갖춰지기까지는 몇 달및 몇 주가 걸릴텐데, 이는 백신 덕분이거나 사람들이 감염 때문에 면역력을 갖게 되어서 거나, 낮아지는 계절성 때문이다."
"We anticipate that there will be a period of quiet before COVID-19 may come back toward the end of the year, but not necessarily the pandemic coming back," Kluge said.
클루게는 "우리는 코로나19가 올해 말 다시 찾아오기 전 잠잠한 기간이 있을 거라고는 예상하지만, 반드시 팬데믹의 귀환을 예상하는 것은 아니다"라고 말했다.
Top U.S. scientist Anthony Fauci expressed similar optimism on Sunday, telling ABC News talk show "This Week" that with COVID-19 cases coming down "rather sharply" in parts of the United States, "things are looking good."
미국 최고 과학자 앤서니 파우치는 ABC 뉴스 토크쇼 "디스 위크"에서 코로나19 확진자가 미국 일부분 지역에서 "다소 급격하게" 추락하는 것으로 보아 "현 상황은 좋아보인다"며 일요일 클루게의 관점과 유사한 낙관론을 표현했다.
While cautioning against over confidence, he said that if the recent fall in case numbers in areas like the U.S.'s northeast continued, "I believe that you will start to see a turnaround throughout the entire country."
파우치는 과한 자신감은 가지지 말라고 경고했지만 만약 미국 북동쪽과 같은 지역에서 최근 확진자 수 감소가 이어진다면 "미국 전역에서 호전을 보이기 시작할 것이라고 생각한다"라고 말했다.
