After voluntarily joining the Marine Corps last month, actor Hyun Bin will serve his 21-month mandatory military service at the Marine’s headquarters in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, Marine Corps officials said.
But before beginning his work publicizing Marine service, Hyun will be dispatched for five to six months to northwestern Baengnyeong Island, just 14 kilometers off from Jangsangot which houses a North Korean naval base.
The actor whose real name is Kim Tae-pyeong, will serve at the 6th Brigade of the Marine Corps on the island starting later this month after completing a seven-week basic training at the Marine Corps boot camp in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province.
A ranking official at the brigade confirmed this. “He will stay here for five or six months,” the official said. Kim’s assignment to the island was made in respect of his wishes.
Nearly 5,000 South Korean troops, including Marines, are stationed on the island. A South Korean warship, the Cheonan, was torpedoed in waters off this island in March, killing 46 sailors. The incident sent inter-Korean relations plummeting to their lowest level in years. Kim will be discharged on Dec. 6, 2012.
현빈 해병대 홍보병 보직
지난 달 초 해병대에 자원 입대한 톱 스타 현빈이 경기도 화성군 해병대 본부에서 21개월 의무 병역을 하게 된다고 해병대 당국이 밝혔다.
해병대 홍보병으로 본부에 배치받기 전 현빈은 4-5개월 백령도 근무를 위해 이 북서부 섬에 파견된다. 백령도는 한국 최북서단 섬으로 북한 해군기지인 장산곳에서 14km밖에 떨어져 있지 않다.
현빈(실명 김태평)은 경상북도 포항의 해병대 신병훈련소에서 7주간의 기초훈련을 받고 난 이달 말경 이 섬의 6여단에서 근무하게 된다.
여단의 고위인사는 이를 확인해주었다. 그는 “현빈은 이곳에서 5-6 개월 머물 것”이라고 말했다. 이 곳 섬 근무는 자신의 희망을 존중해 이뤄진 것이다.
해병을 포함 5,000여명의 군이 이 섬에 주둔하고 있다. 지난해 3월 이 섬 해역에서 해군 함정인 천안함이 북한의 어뢰를 맞아 두 동강 나면서 승조원 46명이 죽었다. 이 사건으로 남북관계는 수년래 최악의 상태로 떨어졌다. 현빈은 2012년 12월 6일 제대하는 것으로 돼 있다.
