A number of candidates from the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea (MPK) and minor opposition People's Party are forming an alliance in their districts in the run-up to the April 13 general election.
Their move to join forces to field one candidate from the opposition bloc is expected to gain momentum after People's Party Co-Chairman Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo indicated Tuesday that he would not oppose candidates choosing to do so.
Some other MPK candidates also have agreed to put up a single candidate with the Justice Party, another minor opposition party, in their constituencies despite the MPK leadership's refusal to join hands with it on a party level.
The opposition is worried that a split vote among liberal supporters may help the ruling Saenuri Party to win a bigger majority in the 300-seat National Assembly.
Their need to field a single opposition candidate is growing especially in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, the country's most populated area with fiercely contested constituencies.
Merging candidacies by April 4 is crucial as the National Election Commission (NEC) will finalize the list of candidates on that date and print out their names on ballot papers regardless of alliances made afterwards.
At least two pairs of candidates from the People's Party and MPK have agreed to come up with a single candidacy.
Without consulting the party leadership, Park Gwang-jin of the People's Party decided to give up his bid for Dongan B in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province to support the MPK's Lee Jeong-gook.
In Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, Lee Yong-beom of the People's Party and Huh Young of the MPK agreed to merge their candidacy after an opinion poll showed that voters there favored Huh over Lee.
Two other People's Party candidates — Reps. Chyung Ho-joon and Boo Jwa-hyun — are awaiting a response from their MPK opponents after offering to field a single candidate.
Both Chyung and Boo joined the People's Party earlier this month after failing to win nominations with the MPK.
Chyung asked the MPK's Lee Ji-soo, a former lawyer, to merge their candidacy in Seoul Seongdong B.
Boo made the same offer to Son Chang-won for Danwon B in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.
Fourteen pairs of MPK and Justice Party candidates have agreed to field a single candidate in their constituencies as of Monday.
One is the Justice Party's Roh Hoe-chan, a former two-term lawmaker, and Huh Sung-moo, who dropped out of the race to help the former win in Changwon-Seongsan, South Gyeongsang Province.
Ahn said Tuesday it would be difficult to prevent the parties' candidates from joining hands on their own although he is against forming an alliance with the MPK.
He is seeking to break the political system dominated by two major parties.
The MPK leadership has called for an alliance with the People's Party, but not the Justice Party.
Interim leader Kim Chong-in previously refused Justice Party Chairwoman Sim Sang-jeung's offer, saying the two parties "do not share common ground in their partisanship."
