BUSAN – The 26th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) kicked off Wednesday for a 10-day run with director Im Sang-soo's "Heaven: To the Land of Happiness."
부산 – 10일 간 진행되는 제26회 부산국제영화제가 수요일 임상수 감독의 ‘행복의 나라로'를 개막작으로 선정하며 막을 올렸다.
A year after a scaled-down event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this edition promises to be attract 1,000-plus participants.
코로나19로 인해 행사 규모를 축소한 예년과 달리 올해는 1,000명 이상의 인원이 참석할 것으로 내다봤다.
A raft of stars have been confirmed to attend the festival, including Song Joong-ki of "Space Sweepers," Jeon Jong-seo of "Mona Lisa and The Blood Moon," Han So-hee of "My Name" and Yoo Ah-in of "Hellbound."
‘승리호'의 송중기, ‘모나리자와 블러드 문'의 전종서, ‘마이 네임'의 한소희, ‘지옥'의 유아인 등 배우들의 대거 참석도 확정되었다.
A total of 223 films from 70 countries will be screened at BIFF, slightly higher than the 192 films showcased last year.
192편의 영화가 상영된 지난해와 달리 올해는 70여 개국 223편의 영화들이 상영될 예정이다.
"Heaven," which opened the festival, was selected for the official selection in the 2020 Cannes Film Festival.
영화제의 시작을 알린 ‘행복의 나라로'는 칸영화제 ‘2020 오피셜 셀렉션'으로 선정되었다.
The film revolves around two men ― played by Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il ― who inadvertently become wealthy and go on a road trip together in pursuit of happiness.
최민식과 박해일이 연기한 두 남자의 이야기를 다룬 이 영화는 우연히 거액을 손에 쥐고 함께 행복을 추구하며 로드 트립을 떠나는 이야기를 담았다.
In addition, Academy Award-winning actress Youn Yuh-jung appears as the glamorous Madame Yoon.
여기에 오스카상을 수상한 배우 윤여정이 매력적인 윤여사 역할을 맡았다.
At the press conference for the film held in the Busan Cinema Center, director Im explained "Heaven" as being very different from his earlier films such as "The Taste of Money" (2012) in which he vividly critiques the haves.
임 감독은 영화의 전당에서 열린 기자시사회에서 '행복을 찾아서'는 가진 자들을 생생하게 비판하던 '돈의 맛(2012)'과 같은 전작과 매우 다르다고 설명했다.
"This film is a soft-spoken, kind-hearted film. Some might say it's a bit generic and unsophisticated. However, I wanted to write about a dying man's last journey because I think about death more concretely as I age. This subject matter naturally struck me because I have more experience with the deaths of loved ones," Im said.
임 감독은 "영화가 좀 선량하다 할까. 좀 착한 면이 있다. 냉소적이고 그런 영화를 만든다고 말씀하셨지만 나이가 들면서 조금 죽음에 대해서 더 구체적으로 마주하고 생각하게 되는 기회가 많아지더라. 그런 느낌을 가지고 이 영화를 만들었다"고 말했다.
Altogether, 11 films are vying for the prestigious New Currents Award, including "The Absent Director" by Arvand Dashtaray, "Photocopier" by Wregas Bhanuteja and "Farewell, My Hometown" by Wang Er Zhuo.
한편 아르반드 다쉬타라이 감독의 '감독은 부재중'. 레가스 바누테자 감독의 '복사기', 왕얼저우 감독의 '안녕, 내 고향'을 비롯한 11개 작품들이 뉴 커런츠 부문에서 경쟁한다.

Director Leung Longman's "Anita," a biopic film about Hong Kong singer and actress Anita Mui, will close the festival.
이 영화제는 홍콩의 가수이자 배우 매염방의 이야기를 담은 렁록만 감독의 전기 영화 '매염방' 상영을 끝으로 막을 내린다.
The 26th edition of BIFF will be held until Oct. 15.
제26회 부산국제영화제는 10월 15일 폐막한다.
