Small business owners are under mounting pressure to pay back their principal and interest on loans, with the financial authority set to end a relief program enabling the self-employed to delay loan payments to the end of March.

The program was started in early 2020 shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, as part of support measures for the self-employed and small- and medium-sized enterprises. The government has since extended the program's operation three times to next month.

Even if the pandemic is showing no signs of abating, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) is not currently considering extending the plan further and intends to end the program next month.

As most small business borrowers' sales have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels, this plan is feared to come as a huge financial burden to borrowers.

According to data from the nation's top five lenders ― KB, Shinhan, Hana, Woori and NongHyup ― the total amount of principal and interest for which payments have been postponed due to the relief program reached 139.4 trillion won ($116.7 billion) as of the end of January 2022.

But banks and the financial authority are in talks over other potential programs to minimize the shock to borrowers, including delaying maturity dates and offering financial consulting services.
