Kim Young-gil, president of Handong Global University, was nominated as chairman of the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE), Wednesday.
He has been named to succeed Korea University President Lee Ki-su to head the organization that determines and oversees admissions methods and other key polices on universities.
Kim graduated from Seoul National University in Metallurgical Engineering, and earned his master’s degree at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He earned his Ph.D in Materials Science & Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.
Working as a research scientist at the NASA Lewis Research Center from 1974 to 1976, he has also won various awards including the NASA Tech Brief Awards in 1971 and 1981.
From 1978 to 1995, he worked as a professor at the Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and became the first president of Handong Global University in 1995.
Kim will be officially elected to the post at a general assembly meeting Thursday and Friday at Busan.
