Officials at Gwangjin Police Station in Seoul said Friday that a sergeant in his 30s who belonged to a riot squad unit based at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA), was arrested Oct. 5 on suspicions of attempted rape and home invasion.
They added that the case was forwarded to the prosecution, which indicted him.
The officer, whose name was withheld, allegedly followed a woman in her 20s to her apartment in Gwangjin-gu, eastern Seoul, at around 12:13 a.m. Sept. 11. As she opened the door to her apartment, the officer held the woman's arm and tried to drag her inside, according to surveillance camera footage of the building.
As she screamed and resisted, he ran away from the apartment complex, hailed a taxi and fled. Police apprehended him Oct. 3 after identifying him through camera records in and around the building.
During questioning, the man denied the crime, claiming he did not intend to sexually assault the woman and he did not remember exactly what happened as he was very drunk.
The SMPA removed him from his position Oct. 4 after an arrest warrant was sought for him. They plan to take further disciplinary action according to the prosecution's investigation and any potential court verdict.
In recent years there have been many cases of men stalking women living alone and attempting to break into their homes to sexually assault them.
In a case in Sillim-dong in Seoul, which went viral following the release of CCTV footage of the incident, a man tried to slip into a woman's house when she opened the door of her apartment, but was narrowly prevented from doing so. He stayed in front of the door for a few minutes, trying the door handle and keypad lock.
A local court recently sentenced him to a year in prison after finding guilty of attempted home invasion, but not attempted rape, saying there was no direct evidence of an intention to sexual assault the woman.
