The ASEAN-Korea Center sent an investment and market research mission to Hanoi, Vietnam, from Dec. 6 to 9, in cooperation with the Vietnam Automation Association (VAA) and the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA).
The mission included representatives from the robotics and automation sectors.
As the leaders of Korea and Vietnam agreed to increase their trade to $100 billion by 2020 during a summit last month, this program aims to further accelerate trade ties in the sectors in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the organization said.
"With an aim to achieve industrialization and modernization by 2020, the Vietnamese government is very active in upgrading their science and technology sectors as well as in attracting foreign investments in relevant industries," ASEAN-Korea Center Secretary General Kim Young-sun said.
Robotics is among the most promising industries _ selected as a priority direction in the strategy for science and technology development for 2011-20 _ to allow Vietnam to participate in global supply chains, the secretary general said.
As part of the program, the mission attended the Korea-Vietnam Investment Forum on Dec. 8 in Hanoi.
Kim, VAA Chairman Nguyen Quan and Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Lee Hyuk attended the opening ceremony.
In the following sessions, senior officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and the Vietnam Robotics Association gave briefings on Vietnam's investment promotion policies, incentives for high-tech and robotic industries and the current investment projects in the industries.
Experts from KIRIA gave an overview of the robotics industry in Korea. Later, business networking sessions allowed mission members to introduce their company profiles to their Vietnamese counterparts and a build network for future cooperation.
During his tour of the ASEAN area last month, Korean President Moon Jae-in unveiled the ASEAN-ROK Future Community Vision, vowing to boost cooperation in a vast range of areas, including information and communications technology (ICT). In line with the growing needs of ASEAN countries to foster high-tech industries, the organization has introduced trade and investment programs in the sectors of ICT, smart city, smart manufacturing, robotics and e-commerce.
The organization also hosted a workshop titled Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) Tourism for Sustainable Regional Development in ASEAN at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Jeju International Training Center (JITC), Dec. 5-9
The UNITAR Centre International de Formation des Autorites et Leaders (CIFAL)/JITC, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) and the Jeju Tourism Organization co-hosted the event attended by policymakers and professionals from the 10 ASEAN member states.
Jeju Island is both home to UNESCO Natural Heritage Sites and a popular MICE destination that is ranked seventh in Asia and 27th globally, the secretary general said.
"At the ASEAN-Korea Tourism Capacity-Building Workshop, organized by the ASEAN-Korea Center in Davao, Philippines, this January, local tourism professionals benchmarked Jeju's MICE strategies," Kim said. "As this year marks the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, we are at the most appropriate venue at the most opportune time, dealing with the most timely topic."
During the four-day training program, experts gave presentations and lectures on topics including an "Overview of Sustainable Tourism Development in the Asia-Pacific Region," "Understanding MICE Tourism," "Global Trends of Tourism and MICE Industry," "Adopting Sustainability in Convention and Hotel Management," "ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-2025," "Marketing for MICE Destinations: Challenges and Opportunities," and "Sustainable Consumption and Production for MICE Tourism." To enable in-depth learning, participants took part in the simulation of policy implementation, a self-assessment exercise, group work and discussion, as well as action plan presentations.
In line with the key element of the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-2025, the organization has focused on sustainable tourism for development. The programs include the Community-based Tourism Program under the theme of "Youth Fostering Sustainable Tourism Development" in Chiang Mai, Thailand (January 2018), as well as the Capacity Building Workshops in Vang Vieng, Lao PDR, and Bagan, Myanmar (February 2018).
