Seoul National University (SNU)'s total assets, including its real estate and buildings, are estimated at 3.2 trillion won ($2.8 billion).
Rep. Kim Yoo-jung of the main opposition Democratic Party released the data compiled by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Sunday.
Its real estate accounted for the largest portion of its assets at 1.9 trillion won, followed by buildings (1.2 trillion won), structures (10 billion won), and trees (670 million won).
Other property and copyrights accounted for the remainder.
Of its real estate holdings, its Gwanak campus in Seoul is estimated at 926 billion won. According to SNU's incorporation bill that was railroaded by the ruling party at the National Assembly last December, the government is to hand over its national property without any additional cost to the school.
Opposition party members and other civic groups are expected to oppose the plan to hand over the national asset valued at more than 3 trillion won in the incorporation of the school.
Rep. Kim said that it is "unfair to allow SNU to be privileged with such a gracious perk in addition to the autonomy it will enjoy in budget and personnel management."
According to research by the Korean Educational Development Institute, 64.3 percent of some 3,700 faculty members working at national universities around the country said they opposed the idea of incorporating national schools.
