Some local universities are starting off on the wrong foot even before the start of the new semester, by holding lavish events.

Soongsil University was harshly criticized by its students for spending sumptuously on a fancy ceremony to welcome freshmen Monday at Jangchoong Stadium, Seoul, which included stages equipped with fireworks and performances by singer Psy and girl group Sistar.

Students were up in arms over the school’s luxurious spending on the welcoming ceremony after the school’s decision to raise the tuition fees by 2.8 percent citing financial difficulties. While other schools were freezing rates, the school raised tuition for a second straight year.

``It’s hard to understand that the school would spend tens of millions of won on a lavish ceremony after raising tuition. We demand the school withdraw the hike,’’ the school’s student council said during a press conference at the venue before the event.

Lee Hyang-lim, president of the student council, said the students do not want singers at their campus, but high quality education.

The student council sent text messages the previous day, encouraging freshmen to boycott the ceremony and block the school from pushing up the tuition fees. As a result, the ceremony venue was emptier than expected, with only some 600 students and parents. The school originally estimated the number of attendants to be about 3,000.

Other schools were also criticized, including Hansung University which held an event at a ritzy vacation spot in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province and invited celebrities. The school also had freshmen pay 65,000 won each to attend.

Freshmen at Sejong have University complained that they had to participate in an inappropriate game during a department’s welcoming party last February.

According to students who attended, some games went too far to the extent they felt humiliated. One game had them compete in making the most sexual pose they could come up with, while others also included sexual pranks.

The department head student explained that it was confusing because the games have been held in the past too and that they never forced the freshmen to participate. However, one student pointed out that they may have not literally been forced to take part, but an atmosphere was created that eventually pushed them to participate.
