Larvae were found in one of Nongshim’s instant cup noodles, Daejeon Ilbo reported Friday, citing a consumer.
According to the report, the woman, identified only as Lee, bought the popular “yukgaejang” noodles on Thursday at a supermarket near her house in Daejeon. Her daughter opened the package and found some larvae squirming around in the dried fried noodles.
She said there were a number of bugs and something black, assumed to be eggs and pupa, were spotted. Lee sealed the cup immediately after taking some photos and called up the snack maker. The product had more than two months until its expiration date.
Nongshim spokesman told The Korea Times that the bugs seem to be larvae of the Indian meal moth, which is infamous for its unusually sharp teeth that could eat through the wrapping.
“Nothing is for sure yet and we will refer the case to the Korea Food and Drug Administration but the Indian meal moth’s larvae cannot be blocked (from getting into the products),” he said.
The news comes after less than a week when larvae was found in “Saewutang,” another cup noodle made by Nongshim. The snack maker was under fire in 2008 when a substance believed to be a dried mouse head was found in its shrimp snack, “Saewukkang.”
