An ice skating rink, which is one of the city's most enchanting winter attractions installed annually at Seoul Plaza, will open Thursday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) said Tuesday that it will run the outdoor rink for 52 days until Feb. 9 next year.
This year's rink will be similar in size to last year's, being equipped with more spacious resting places, and also including a book cafe and a cafeteria.
The city said that it will suspend the rink's operations if the comprehensive air-quality index (CAI) surpasses 151, signifying "moderate air pollution." If so, a notice of suspension will be posted on the webpage (www.seoulskate.or.kr).
For the opening event, the city will hold various performances, including a drawing show and a figure skating show. Also, a structure symbolizing the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will be installed next to the rink.
"This year, we have focused on improving services to help the participants enjoy the winter activity more safely and conveniently," an SMG official said. "We will also provide many programs to offer greater enjoyment for citizens and foreign tourists alike."
The ice rink has been run every winter since 2004. A total of 177,383 people visited the rink last year. Among them, 10,528 were from overseas.
Admission costs 1,000 won per hour per person, with free skate rental. For the opening day, admission is free. The rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and holidays.
