Prosecutors are questioning former lawmaker Shim Hag-bong for allegedly receiving illegal political funds.
Daegu District Prosecutors' Office said Monday that it detained Shim in Seoul, Sunday, to question him after finding circumstantial evidence during the investigation into previous allegations made against him of sexual assault.
Earlier this year, the former Saenuri Party lawmaker was accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Daegu in July but was acquitted of the allegations in October because prosecutors concluded that what occurred was not forcible sexual intercourse. He resigned from his legislative post over the scandal in October.
According to the prosecution, Shim allegedly received 30 million won from a firm which conducted research projects funded by state organizations such as the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology.
Last month, prosecutors raided three places including the house of a worker in Gumi, South Gyeongsang Province, in connection to the allegations.
"We are checking the facts based on the evidence we have seized, and we plan to seek an arrest warrant soon," a prosecutor said.
