'Attention': Hybe's girl group NewJeans arrives on K-pop scene

The competition among K-pop girl groups will get into full swing following the arrival of much-anticipated rookie act NewJeans, Friday (KST). Its debut album will hit multiple streaming platforms on Aug. 1, and hit store shelves on Aug. 8.
한국 시간으로 금요일 큰 기대를 받는 신예 걸그룹 뉴진스의 등장으로 케이팝 걸그룹 경쟁이 최고조에 달할 것으로 보인다. 이들은 8월 1일 여러 스트리밍 플랫폼에 음원을 발표하고 8일 음반을 발매한다.

NewJeans is a group launched by All Doors One Room (ADOR), a label under Hybe that represents K-pop titan BTS. It released the music video of its track "Attention" at midnight early Friday, and it has already exceeded 1.3 million views on YouTube as of 3 p.m.
뉴진스는 케이팝 거물 BTS의 소속사 하이브 산하 레이블 어도어(ADOR, All Doors One Room)가 선보인 걸그룹이다. 22일 금요일 자정 ‘Attention'의 뮤직비디오를 공개했으며 공개 15시간만인 오후 3시에 유튜브 조회수 130만회를 넘어섰다.

The average age of the five members ― Minji (18), Hanni (18), Danielle (17), Haerin (16) and Hyein (14) ― is 16.6. Although more details about them have not been disclosed, Hanni is reportedly Vietnamese and Danielle was born to an Australian father and a Korean mother.
뉴진스는 18세 민지, 18세 하니, 17세 다니엘, 16세 해린과 14세 혜인으로 구성되어 있으며, 다섯 멤버들의 평균 나이는 16.6세이다. 이들에 대한 더 많은 정보는 공개되지 않았으나, 하니는 베트남인이며 다니엘은 호주인 아버지와 한국인 어머니를 둔 것으로 전해졌다.

The quintet was formed by Min Hee-jin, the CEO of ADOR who joined Hybe in 2019. Prior to joining Hybe, she worked as a creative director at SM Entertainment ― another major K-pop record label ― for two decades, contributing to the success of numerous acts such as f(x), SHINee and EXO.
이 5인조 걸그룹은 2019년 하이브에 합류한 어도어의 민희진 대표가 기획했다. 하이브 합류 전, 민 대표는 또 다른 주요 케이팝 음반사 SM 엔터테인먼트의 아트디렉터로서 20년간 활동하며 에프엑스, 샤이니, 엑소 등 수많은 그룹들의 성공에 기여했다.

Min is best known for creating a unique video tape-like album for f(x)'s 2013 studio album "Pink Tape," and devising a range of inventive concepts for other SM artists, helping them carve out their own niche. In the case of EXO, she had the members put on different school uniforms for their performance of "Growl" (2013), highlighting their youthful energy. "Growl" later became EXO's biggest hit.
민 대표는 2013년 f(x)의 정규 앨범 ‘Pink Tape'를 독특한 테이프 모양으로 만든 것으로 알려진 한편 다른 SM 소속 아티스트들이 고유한 틈새 시장을 개척하는 것을 도우며 다양한 독창적 컨셉을 고안해냈다. 엑소의 경우, 2013년 ‘으르렁' 활동 당시 멤버들에게 다양한 교복을 입히며 젊은 에너지를 강조했다. 이후 ‘으르렁'은 엑소의 가장 큰 히트곡이 되었다.

In March, she was named on the list of the U.S. magazine Variety's "Women That Have Made an Impact in Global Entertainment" along with veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung, the first Korean to win an Oscar for acting, and Jung Ho-yeon, who appeared in Netflix's 2021 hit, "Squid Game."
지난 3월 민 대표는 미국 연예 매체 ‘버라이어티'가 선정한 ‘세계 연예계 업게에 영향력을 미친 여성' 리스트에 한국 최초로 오스카 여우조연상을 수상한 배우 윤여정, 2021년 넷플릭스 인기작 ‘오징어게임'에 출연한 배우 정호연과 함께 이름을 올렸다.

"Pop music is like the outfits that people put on every day, in a sense that it lies very close to their lives," Min said in a statement, Friday. "Jeans, in particular, are beloved fashion items among people of all genders and ages. The name of our new act reveals the members' determination to become an icon of their time, just like jeans that have timeless value. The name also refers to 'New Genes.'"
금요일 민 대표는 "대중음악은 일상과 초근접해 있는 문화이기 때문에 마치 매일 입는 옷과 같다"며 "특히 진(Jeans)은 시대를 불문해 남녀노소 모두에게 사랑받아 온 아이템이다. 뉴진스(NewJeans)에는 매일 찾게 되고 언제 입어도 질리지 않는 진처럼 시대의 아이콘이 되겠다는 포부와 New Genes가 되겠다는 각오가 담겨 있다"고 덧붙였다.
